How to Make Peanut Butter Pretzel Hearts

Who could possibly resist the sweet and salty combination of chocolate, peanut butter, and pretzels? With the recipe, large pretzels are filled with a peanut butter mixture and then dipped in chocolate, making perfect heart-shaped treats for Valentine’s Day.

They are simple (though a little messy) to make and pretty enough to impress your sweetie. They are so utterly irresistible that they are sure to become a Valentine’s Day tradition.

Hearts Made from Pretzels

Peanut Butter Filled Pretzel Hearts Recipe

  •  20 large pretzels
  • 14 ounces of white chocolate chips, divided
  • 8 ounces of pink chocolate (candy wafers or “melts”)
  • 8 ounces dark or milk chocolate
  • 1 tablespoon light corn syrup
  • 1 cup chunky peanut butter

Cover a large baking sheet with waxed paper. Place the pretzels on the waxed paper.

Melt White Chocolate for Heart Pretzels Put 6 ounces of white chocolate in a small, microwave-safe mixing bowl. Place the bowl in the microwave and heat for 15 seconds. Take the bowl out and stir the white chocolate well. Place back in the microwave and heat for another 15 seconds. Stir well. If lumps of solid chocolate remain, you can microwave for 15 seconds more.

Mix together the Peanut butter and white chocolate Once the white chocolate is melted, stir in the corn syrup. The mixture may get fairly stiff. Stir in the peanut butter and mix well.

Fill the Pretzels with Peanut Butter MixtureUsing a butter knife or rubber spatula, fill the holes in the pretzels with the peanut butter mixture. Level and smooth the peanut butter so it is flush with the top of the pretzels. Place the pretzels in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

Using 3 small microwave-safe bowls, place 8 ounces of white chocolate in one, 8 ounces of pink chocolate in one, and 8 ounces of dark or milk chocolate (or a combination of the two) in one. Milk chocolate is thicker and a little harder to use for dipping, so you may want to add ½ teaspoon shortening to keep it thin enough for dipping.

Tips for melting chocolate in the microwave: Melt the chocolate slowly at 15 second increments, stirring well each time. Don’t overheat or the chocolate may turn hard or burn. When there are just tiny lumps left, stop heating and stir well. The heat from the bowl will finish melting the chocolate.

Dip Filled Pretzels in Melted ChocolateWorking with one color at a time, melt the chocolate and then let it cool just a little. Dip the pretzels by hand, shaking off excess chocolate. Lightly scrape the bottom of the pretzel against the bowl and set on the waxed paper. Reserve a little of each color for drizzling over the completed pretzels.

Once you have all of the pretzels dipped, chill the pretzels until the chocolate is firm. If you are pressed for time, they can be put in the freezer briefly instead.

Drizzle Chocolate on Top of Heart Pretzels Reheat the reserved chocolate and drizzle over chilled pretzels, using a spoon, fork, or a plastic zipper bag with one tip snipped off.  Chill the pretzels again so the drizzled chocolate hardens.

Completed Heart Pretzels Now that your peanut butter filled pretzel hearts are done, you can give them to all of your sweethearts. You should store the pretzels in the refrigerator, but – who are we kidding – they probably won’t last long enough to worry about storing them!
